Laughing while white: Irony, race, and the online politics of transgression

Cindy Ma is a doctoral candidate at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and a research assistant with the Computational Propaganda Project. Her research investigates the function of irony, humour, and satire in the dissemination of racist ideology online.

Prior to joining the OII, she worked at the non-profit Debate Mate, where she oversaw educational programs aimed at improving critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills in young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. With Debate Mate, Cindy ran educational interventions throughout the UK, as well as in Jamaica, Kenya, Ghana, Vietnam, and Nepal. She completed her Master’s at the London School of Economics and her Bachelor of Arts at Western University.
