Jake Pyne about the “gender pronoun war”
In an op-ed published in NOW Magazine, Jake Pyne, 2014 Trudeau scholar, discusses the recent “non-binary gender pronoun war“ raised by University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson, following the proposal of Bill C-16. The bill would add gender identity and gender expression to the list of prohibited grounds for discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act and would amend the Criminal Code to make it a criminal offense to publicly incite hatred based on gender identity or expression. In his article, Jake wonders, “In what kind of society does the sentiment ‘You can’t make me’ constitute a compelling argument?”.
Jake is seeking to establish innovative ways to accompany the parents, caregivers, and health providers of transgender youth during their gender transition.
