Named the seventh parliamentary poet laureat in Canadian history, Georges Elliott Clarke is Professor of English at the University of Toronto, and in 2005 Trudeau fellow.

Prof. Clarke is an officer of Order of Nova Scotia and Order of Canada--the latter honour to which he was joined by seven Trudeau Foundation community members.

In a CBC interview, Prof. Clarke said he was "humbled and honoured" to represent the people of Canada, and added that he sees it as, "being the people's poet laureate of Canada."

Clarke indicated that though his poetry is primarily in English, he would seek to "reach out to Francophones, as well as to poets from third language communities and indigenous communities."
