28 May STANFIELD SYMPOSIUM 2026
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation is continuing its partnership with the Stanfield Conversations and Dalhousie University. As in 2025, a symposium and a masterclass will take place ahead of the Stanfield Conversations evening event.
REFLECTING ON GLOBAL TRANSFORMATIONS
The 2026 edition, provisionally titled After the Rupture: Navigating Democracy and Diversification in a Post-liberal World, will explore the transformation of the global order and its implications for Canada.
In a context shaped by democratic backsliding and shifting great power dynamics, discussions will focua on:
- Canada’s relationships with China and India;
- the challenges of economic and diplomatic diversification;
- the complexities of building partnerships with non-liberal or democratically eroding states.
The Stanfield Conversations will take place on the evening of October 15, 2026, in Halifax.
SYMPOSIUM AND MASTERCLASS
(Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Alongside the Stanfield Conversations, two complementary activities will be organized jointly by Dalhousie University and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation:
- on October 14, 2026: a symposium for doctoral students, bringing together participants from the region as well as approximately five to six Foundation Scholars;
- on October 15, 2026: a masterclass bringing together guest speakers from the Stanfield Conversations and symposium participants.
These activities will provide participants with opportunities to engage directly with scholars and practitioners on the issues explored during the Conversations.
PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATION
This activity is reserved for active Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholars.
A call for registrations will be shared with the Foundation community in the coming months. As participation is limited, registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
Participants are encouraged to arrive on October 13 and depart on October 16, 2026. As part of the symposium, each participant will be invited to present a component of their ongoing research project (whether a chapter, excerpt, or work-in-progress discussion) in order to contribute to the collective exchange and discussions.
COSTS COVERED BY THE FOUNDATION
The Foundation will cover:
- airfare;
- accommodation in Halifax during the event.
All other expenses, including meals not included in the program and personal expenses, must be covered through participants’ Travel and Activity Allowance (TAA).
