Roxana Akhmetova is a doctoral student in Migration Studies at the University of Oxford. Her research is focused on what ethical artificial intelligence (AI) means in immigration and border control. More specifically, Roxana’s research will investigate how different actors (state, private tech companies, advocacy groups, and migrants) understand ‘ethical AI’ and the impacts AI is having on borderwork. Roxana has a B A and M A in Political Science from The University of Winnipeg and The University of Manitoba, respectively, and a M Sc in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford. She holds the positions of Equality and Diversity Officer at the Keble College Middle Common Room and she is part of the Diversity and Inclusion Team with the Oxford AI Society. Roxana currently works as a research assistant at the Oxford Department of International Development and has disseminated her research ideas in the forms of book and report chapters, television appearances, and blog posts on the use of AI in border governance as well as on the role of Canadian newcomers in reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples.
