Monique Auger is Métis of Haudenosaunee, Nisga’a, and French ancestry. She lives on the territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən peoples and is a PhD student in the Social Dimensions of Health program at the University of Victoria. She is a passionate educator, teaching as a sessional instructor in Indigenous Health at both the University of Victoria and Camosun College.
Monique has maintained a strong relationship with the Métis Nation British Columbia as a Métis researcher, a proud citizen, volunteer, and former elected youth leader. She holds a M Sc from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and a B A in First Nations Studies from the University of Northern British Columbia.
Monique’s program of research has been responsive to the needs and strengths of her Métis community, looking at determinants of health and wellness with a focus on cultural continuity and community connections. Her doctoral research explores the ways in which Métis values, culture and traditions, and ways of knowing, may contribute to a prevention-focused Métis child welfare system. Building on her past work in investigations with the Representative for Children and Youth, her research aims to inform the future of Métis jurisdiction with respect to child welfare.
