Erin Tolley is Canada Research Chair in Gender, Race and Inclusive Politics and Associate Professor of Political Science at Carleton University. An expert on the relationship between socio-demographic diversity and politics in Canada, she is the author of Framed: Media and the Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics, which was awarded the 2017 Donald Smiley Prize, an honour the recognizes the best book in Canadian politics and government. Her doctoral research was funded by the Trudeau Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and examined how race affects the media’s reporting on candidates in Canadian politics. Dr. Tolley’s current research focuses on race, gender and electoral representation, including projects on harassment in politics, the measurement of racial identity, and patterns of political exclusion. She has published in Political Research Quarterly, Electoral Studies, and the Canadian Journal of Political Science, among others and is co-editor of five books on diversity and politics. Raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Dr. Tolley worked as a policy researcher prior to pursing doctoral studies and held a tenured faculty position at the University of Toronto before coming to Carleton. She regularly provides media commentary on issues related to Canadian politics.
