Dan Werb, PhD, MSc, is an epidemiologist and policy analyst with expertise working in the fields of HIV, addictions, and drug policy. Currently, Dan is Affiliate Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, and a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, San Diego, where he is co-investigator on the El Cuete project, tasked with exploring the impact of policing policy on addiction treatment access among drug users in Tijuana, Mexico.
Additionally, Dan is co-founder of the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy [ICSDP], a recognized global leader in cutting edge policy research and communications. At the ICSDP, Dan is a sought after source of expertise on drug policy, and has appeared in media related to his work in every global hemisphere. He coordinates and manages all ICSDP research strategies and has worked on communications campaigns around such high profile projects such as the [Vienna Declaration] and the [Stop the Violence BC campaign].
Finally, as a researcher at the Urban Health Research Initiative at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, Dan has published dozens of studies on issues related to health policy and addictions, with a focus on preventing the transition of street youth into injection drug use, as well as on identifying determinants of health among street-based drug-using populations. He has also published extensively on global drug policy and HIV policy.
Dan is a former research fellow at the Senlis Council (now ICOS group), a European drug policy lobby group, and conducts knowledge translation on drug policy and public health. Dan is a 2012 Trudeau Foundation Scholar and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Postdoctoral Fellow.
