Daz Saunders is an engaged citizen, who learned this commitment from his deaf parents and cannot imagine his life in any other way than by participating in change. He has contributed to civic life in community organizations by advocating for full deaf access to health, the arts, justice and information. His main focus remains language recognition, signing and the contribution of deaf intellectuals.

He is the initiator of the manifesto « Athens Declaration » presented in 2015 to International Congress on the Education of the Deaf for the access of deaf researchers to science, 135 years after this same congress had ruled on the prohibition of sign language in education for the deaf. He is a co-organizer of the 10th International Deaf Academics and Researchers Conference to be held in Montreal in 2021.
