Gerald McMaster, a 2023 Mentor of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, has published Art, Truth & Reconciliation: Indigenous Testimony in the Aftermath of Canada’s Residential Schools, a publication by the Art Canada Institute, founded and led by 2012 Scholar and Foundation Member Sara Angel.
In this publication, Gerald McMaster explores the role of art in preserving and carrying forward the memory of Canada’s residential school system and its lasting impacts.
Bringing together works by Indigenous artists across generations, he shows how art has helped document experiences too often absent from institutional and historical records. These works become forms of testimony, remembrance, and transmission, helping bring greater visibility to realities that have long been overlooked or marginalized.
