Michael Goldbloom, C.M. has had a career of leadership in academia, media and community service.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Modern European History and Literature from Harvard University (1974) and Bachelor of Law Degrees – in Civil Law (1978) and Common Law (1979) - from McGill University.

He began his journalism career as an intern at The Gazette in Montreal in 1973, and as a law student wrote a weekly article summarizing and analysing opinion columns in the French press. In 1980, upon completing his law studies, he was engaged by The Gazette as an editorial writer.

In 1981 he embarked on a ten-year career as a labour lawyer with Martineau Walker (now Fasken).

In 1991 he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Montreal YMCA.

From 1994 to 2001 he served as Publisher of The Gazette.

In 2002 he was appointed as a Visiting Scholar at McGill’s Institute for the Study of Canada.

In 2003 he returned to journalism becoming Deputy Publisher and subsequently Publisher of the Toronto Star.

In 2007 he returned to McGill University as Vice-Principal (PublicAffairs).

The following year he was appointed as the 18th Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Bishop’s University, a position he held for 15 years.

In 2018 Mr. Goldbloom was appointed Chair of the Board of Directors of CBC/Radio-Canada. He was reappointed to a second five-year term in 2022.

In 2023 he was named to the Canadian Military Colleges Review Board which was mandated to assess and make recommendations about the future of Canada’s two military colleges.

Mr. Goldbloom has an extensive record of community service. For example, he was a co-founder and president of Alliance Quebec. He chaired the Boards of the Ville Marie Social Services Centre and Selwyn House School. He served on the Boards of the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres, the Canadian Press and l’Université de Sherbrooke, and he led the Centraide campaign for the Eastern Townships.

In 2013, Mr. Goldbloom was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his efforts to build bridges between Quebec’s linguistic communities.
