Profile
María Juliana Angarita is completing a PhD in museology, mediation, heritage at the Université du Québec à Montréal under the supervision of Professor Jennifer Carter. She holds a doctoral grant from the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et Culture.
María Juliana holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the Universidad del Rosario (Colombia) and a Master’s Degree in Museology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2019, María Juliana received the Prix Roland-Arpin, and in 2020 she received the Young Leadership Award from the Montreal Holocaust Museum. María Juliana is also a core member of the Beyond Museum Walls research team – a multilingual, interdisciplinary research and knowledge mobilization project designed to conceive new methodologies for public dialogue around difficult history and cultural conflict – based at the Curating and Public Scholarship Lab at Concordia University.
Drawing on the experiences of survivors of the Colombian armed conflict, María Juliana’s doctoral research explores how grassroots memorialization initiatives such as commemorations, performances and community museums give rise to heritagization, and how the memory practices of historically marginalized victims foster new approaches to, and uses of, heritage-building “from below” in peacebuilding contexts.
