The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, CM, ONS, MSM, CD, former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (2000-2006) was recognized within the National Honours system as a member of the Order of Canada, the first Chancellor and member of the Order of Nova Scotia, recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, and Canadian Decoration. A graduate of Dalhousie University, and an educator, Mrs. Freeman’s focus on youth related issues has been a hallmark of her commitment to community. She is the recipient of six Honorary Doctorate Degrees, the Public Policy Award Atlantic Canada, the Woman of Action Humanitarian Award from the Canadian Israel Research Foundation, and one of Canada's 100 Outstanding Women by the Richard Ivy School of Business and the Women's Executive Network Trailblazer Award.
She served as Honorary Captain (Navy) to the Royal Canadian Navy and as Chair of the Telus Atlantic Community Foundation. Mrs. Freeman is a former National Director of Save the Children Canada, the RCMP Foundation, the Chairperson’s Advisory Group to the Canadian Judicial Council, the International Women’s Forum of Canada, the Advisory Board of the Prince’s Trust Canada, and Board of Governors of Mount Saint Vincent University.
Mrs. Freeman currently devotes her time nationally to the Boards of Historica-Canada, The Duke of Edinburgh International Awards, the Canadian Institute of Military Veteran’s Health Research, Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence and the Nova Scotia Discovery Centre.
Her significant contributions to youth, to the arts and to public life and her unwavering commitment to philanthropic endeavors continue to enrich the Canadian community.
