James Allan Coutts, C.M., was born in High River, Alberta, and raised in Nanton. He received a B.A. from the University of Alberta, in 1960, and an LL.B., in 1961. He was called to the bar of Alberta in 1962. In 1968, he received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He practised law with McLaws & Co., Calgary, Alberta, 1961-63; he was a Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson (1963-66); a Consultant, McKinsey & Company, Cleveland, Zurich, Toronto (1968-70); a Founding Partner, Canada Consulting (1970-75); the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau (1975-81); a principal of Lowther Consultants Limited (1982-present); and finally Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CIC Canadian Investment Capital Limited (1984-present). He is a member of several associations and foundations; he is Chairman of the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific Foundation Board, Victoria; and Vice Chairman of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
