James Allan Coutts, C.M., was born in High River, ‎Alberta, and raised in Nanton. He received a B.A. ‎from the University of Alberta, in 1960, and an ‎LL.B., in 1961. He was called to the bar of Alberta ‎in 1962. In 1968, he received an M.B.A. from ‎Harvard Business School.‎ He practised law with McLaws & Co., Calgary, ‎Alberta, 1961-63; he was a Secretary to the Prime ‎Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Lester B. ‎Pearson (1963-66); a Consultant, McKinsey & ‎Company, Cleveland, Zurich, Toronto (1968-70); a ‎Founding Partner, Canada Consulting (1970-75); the ‎Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, ‎the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau (1975-‎‎81); a principal of Lowther Consultants Limited ‎‎(1982-present); and finally Chairman and Chief ‎Executive Officer, CIC Canadian Investment Capital ‎Limited (1984-present). He is a member of several ‎associations and foundations; he is Chairman of the ‎Lester B. Pearson United World College of the ‎Pacific Foundation Board, Victoria; and Vice ‎Chairman of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
