2009 Scholar Tamil Kendall is organizing a panel discussion with three other Trudeau Scholars (Lindsey Richardson, May Chazan, and Sherri Brown) at the annual conference of the Canadian Association for HIV Research, which will take place in Saskatoon just prior to the Trudeau Summer Institute. A recent article in Le Devoir talked about a conference entitled "Cities as design laboratories", held in Saint-Etienne (France) on November 30 and December 1st, 2009.  The scientific committee of the symposium included Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, holder of the UNESCO Chair in landscape and environment at the University of Montreal and former Trudeau Fellow (2005).

Chris Tenove, 2008 Trudeau Scholar, authored an article entitled 'Seeking a Nation's Forgiveness' for the Maclean's magazine.  This article is based on his doctoral research at the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Cambodia

Thanks to a Fulbright fellowship and a fellowship from the University of California at Berkeley (John A. Sproul Research Fellowship in Canadian Studies), former Trudeau Fellow Jocelyn Létourneau (2006), will spend five months, from January to May 2010, at Stanford University and at UC Berkeley.  At Stanford, he will be involved with Stanford History Education Group, headed by Sam Wineburg.  At UC Berkeley, he will collaborate with the Canadian Studies Program.  In both places, it will continue his work on the historical consciousness of young Quebecers.

From last November 8th to 21st the City of Kobe (Japan) hosted the 6th International annual Workshop_atelier/terrain (WAT) of the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental design of the University of Montreal (CUPEUM), headed by Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, a former Trudeau Fellow (2005).  47 students and 12 teachers have participated in this meeting which brought together 13 institutions of the CUPEUM's scientific cooperation network out of the 5 regions of the world (Asia, Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and North America).  Click here to learn more about the CUPEUM.

Geneviève Pagé, 2007 Trudeau Scholar, has submitted a consultation report on the Draft Bill for the Act to amend the Civil Code and other legislative provisions as regards adoption and parental authority and will present her report at the National Assembly on January 20, 2010. The government's aim is to adapt the law to match the new social and family situations in which adoption takes place, in order to provide a better response to the current needs of children in Québec. Chris Tenove, 2008 Trudeau Scholar, authored an article entitled 'Seeking a Nation's Forgiveness' in the latest edition of the Maclean's magazine. This article is based on his doctoral research at the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Cambodia. Click here to read the article.

Pascale Fournier has won the 2009 Quebec Bar Legal Contest in the category "legal essay manuscript" for her article "Flirting with God in Western Secular Courts".  The paper, which was read at the opening of the Foundation's 2009 Summer Institute addresses the politics of recognition of Mahr, a specific legal institution invoked by Muslim groups in Canada, the United States, France and Germany. The paper will be published next year in The International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family of the University of Oxford.

Grégoire Webber, Trudeau Alumnus Scholar, Acting President of the Alumni Association and Lecturer in Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, has published a book entitled The Negotiable Constitution (Publishers: Cambridge University Press). Click here for more information.

Professor Coleman is the CIGI Chair in Globalization and Public Policy, Balsillie School of International Affairs and Department of Political Science, University of Waterloo.

Magaly Brodeur, 2009 Trudeau Scholar, has received the Thought Leadership Award in Public Administration, a joint initiative of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration, aims to recognize talent in Canadian schools at the regional and national level. The award was given at the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Public Administration in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Christine Brabant, 2006 Trudeau Scholar, has written a chapter on Homeschooling in The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion, University of Chicago Press. Furthermore, she gave the closing lecture at the REGARD conferences on governance, analysis, thoughtfulness and debate in Namur, Belgium.

Professor Simon Harel, 2009 Trudeau Fellow and professor at UQAM's Literary Studies Department, received the prestigious title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Arts, Humanities and Sciences. This distinction was given to him in recognition of his contribution to the world of social and scientific research, both nationally and internationally. The official induction ceremony will take place next November 28th at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau.

Dr. Clare Bradford has been awarded the first $225,000 Trudeau Visiting Fellowship Prize from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation. A professor in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Bradford will be a Visiting Professor of literary studies at The University of Winnipeg in the 2009-2010 academic year. Her innovative research examines the interplay between children's literature and social practices, and particularly representations of Indigenous peoples and cultures in children's books.

William Coleman, 2007 Trudeau Fellow, is the new Center for International Governance Chair in Globalization and Public Policy at the Balsillie School of International Affairs and Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo. Prior to this nomination, he was the Founding Director of the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.

Vincent Pouliot, Alumnus Scholar, has received the Vincent Lemieux Prize from the Canadian Political Science Association for the best PhD thesis in political science submitted at a Canadian university in 2007 and 2008. Vincent's dissertation, which he completed at the University of Toronto, is entitled Security Community In and Through Practice:The Power Politics of Russia-NATO Diplomacy. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science of McGill University since August 2008.

The Canadian Association of Law Teachers awarded its annual scholarly paper award to Former Trudeau Scholar Robert Leckey (2003), a professor at McGill University since 2006. Professor Leckey also won the John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence, which will be presented to him by the McGill La Students Association at the 2009 convocation ceremony.

The Foundation has learned that Mr. Robert Fowler, Trudeau Mentor, was reported missing when a vehicle carrying him and two colleagues - another Canadian diplomat and their driver - was found abandoned near Niamey, Niger's capital, on December 14. We wish to offer our heartfelt support to Mr. Fowler's family and friends in these difficult moments.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation is currently conducting the first quinquennial evaluation of its activities and impacts. The Board of Directors has appointed an external and independent Distinguished Evaluation Panel to perform the evaluation.

Dr. William C. Leggett [PDF bio], Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Principal, Queen's University, and Board Chair of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, is chairing the panel. Ms. Elizabeth Dowdeswell [PDF bio], visiting professor in Genomics and Global Health at the University of Toronto, and Dr. Gilles G. Patry [PDF bio], former president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa, are the other members of the panel that will submit a strategic evaluation report to the Minister of Industry by March 2009.

As part of the evaluation process, the panel will request from different stakeholders an assessment of the Foundation's work to date.

Kate Hennessy, 2006 Trudeau Scholar, received the Jean Rouch Award at the American Anthropological Association Conference for her co-curation/production of Dane Wajich- Dane-zaa Stories and Songs: Dreamers and the Land. This Virtual Museum website features the Doig River First Nation in Northern British Columbia.

Alexis Lapointe, 2006 Trudeau Scholar, received the Paule Rolland-Thomas Prize from the Department of philosophy of the University of Montreal. This prize is given to the best doctoral student in thesis writing.

Taylor Owen, 2006 Trudeau Scholar, is the winner of The Literary Review of Canada's New Voices competition for an essay on the designated President of the United States Barack Obama and Canadian politics entitled 'Progressivism's End'.

Lisa Freeman, 2008 Trudeau Scholar, received the Griffith Taylor Scholarship from the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto for her academic merit.

Xavier Gravend-Tirole, 2008 Trudeau Scholar, received one of the merit scholarships from the University of Montreal for his excellent academic performance.

Professor Roderick A. Macdonald, Trudeau Fellow 2004, has been elected the 111th President of the Royal Society of Canada.

Professor Rosemary Sullivan, Trudeau Fellow 2008, has received the Lorne Pierce Medal for 2008 of the Royal Society of Canada. The medal is awarded for an achievement of special significance and conspicuous merit in imaginative or critical literature.

Constance Backhouse, Trudeau Fellow 2006, has been invited by the Governor General of Canada, to be part of a state delegation for a two-week visit to Central Europe.

Dyane Adam, Trudeau Mentor 2008, has been nominated to the Quebec Conseil supérieur de l'éducation.

George Elliott Clarke has received the 2008 William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations. Established in 1989, the William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations is presented to a person or persons whose outstanding achievement and commitment has made a significant contribution toward a positive race relations climate in Toronto.

Jason Luckerhoff, 2006 Trudeau Scholar, published an article entitled « Technology and Demographics: Are Cultural Habits Mutating? » in the journal Leisure. According to the authors of that article, surveys on cultural practices and habits (conducted every five years since 1979 by the Québec Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition Féminine [MCCCF]), government statistics on the production and dissemination of cultural products, and research in this field all foresee significant changes that may question the pertinence of government intervention in cultural affairs in Quebec. Xavier Gravend-Tirole, 2008 Trudeau Scholar, received a special prize from the Association canadienne des périodiques catholiques (ACPC) for his article entitled 'L'Inde et ses réincarnations', published in the November 2007 edition of Présence Magazine. The prize was awarded at the ACPC Conference on October 31st. Furthermore, Xavier collaborated on the book entitled Et Dieu dans tout ça!, published by the Fides Editions. The book launch will take place on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 5:00PM at the Paulines Bookstore, located on 2653 Masson Street in Montreal. A conversation with the author Louis Lesage and the collaborators will follow the book launch.

Rajdeep Singh Gill, Trudeau Scholar, gave a talk on "Muslim Contributions to Spaces of Human Dignity in North India and Beyond" at the Centre for Gender Relations and Women's Studies, University of British Columbia, on October 21, 2008. He also presented two papers in India and Bangladesh in January 2008. The first one entitled "Alternate Ontologies and Epistemologies of Archiving and the Politics of Self-Determination" was presented at the CHOTRO: Indigenous Peoples in the Post-Colonial World Conference, Language - Literature - Culture - History conference, organized by the Bhasha Research and Publications Centre in association with Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, National Manuscript Mission of India, European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies, and Indian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies, New Delhi, India. The second one entitled "Pedagogy, Creativity, and Social Justice" was presented at UBINIG: Policy Research for Development Alternatives, Dhaka, Bangladesh. On November 19, 2008, he will give a public lecture on "Transforming Curatorial Practice: Transdisciplinarity, Plural Worldviews, and the Creative Universe" at the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax.

Cassandra Porter, Research Assistant at the Foundation, was among the Concordia students honoured on October 1st at the Forces Avenir Awards gala in Montreal, which recognizes outstanding student projects and community work. Ms. Porter is involved in the Concordia Volunteer Abroad Program (CVAP), an initiative to send volunteer students in the war-torn region of Gulu, Uganda. Foundation President Pierre-Gerlier Forest has been elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Forest received his Fellowship at the Annual Induction Ceremony and Dinner of the Academy on September 23, 2008. Fellows of the Academy are elected on a basis of their demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and commitment to advance academic health sciences. It is one of the highest honours in the field.

Foundation Director Martha Piper was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences that evening as well. It is noteworthy to mention that 2007 Trudeau Mentor Monique Bégin was the Guest of Honour at the Academy banquet in Toronto.

The Honourable Monique Bégin, former Health Canada Minister and mentor 2007, has been elected Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. She receives the highest honour awarded by the Academy and is only the second Distinguished Fellows of the Academy founded in 2004. The honour is open to individuals who meet the usual criteria for Fellowship, but whose accomplishments are considered of such high distinction that only a select few are worthy of this designation.

William D. Coleman, Trudeau Fellow, organized a second South-North Dialogue Meeting in August 2008, following a first dialogue held in September 2007. Among the objectives of this second meeting were: a) to create a community of scholars from Canada and the Global South who share an interest in globalization and its impacts on various of aspects of the human condition; b) to explore opportunities for new research partnerships between scholars and research centres in Canada and the Global South; c) to discuss strategies for engaging with a broader, global public on issues of globalization; and d) to explore what the notion of dialogue might mean in a research group composed of scholars from different cultural settings, distinct disciplines, and faced with continuing relationships of power and hierarchy between South and North. Jason Luckerhoff, Trudeau Scholar, recently presented three papers at the seventh conference "International Conference on Social Science Methodology" within the International Sociological Association conference held at Monte Sant'Angelo Campus in Naples (Italy) 1-5 september 2008: "The Conflicts Between Grounded Theory Requiremenst and Institutional Requiremenst for Scientific Research", "GTM in Canada and European Francophone Research" and "Grounded Theory Research on How Researchers Use Electronic Spaces for Synchronous Dialogue."

David R. Boyd, Trudeau Alumnus Scholar, co-authored a book entitled David Suzuki's Green Guide. How to find fresher, tastier, healthier food, create an eco-friendly home, make sustainable transportation choices, reduce consumption, and be a green citizen (Publishers: Greystone).

Daina Mazutis, Trudeau Scholar 2008, recently presented a paper entitled 'Supererogation: Beyond positive deviance and CSR', at the annual Society for Business Ethics (SBE) Conference in Anaheim, California. In addition, she presented two papers - 'Positive Forms of Leadership (PFL): A qualitative exploration at the strategic leadership level' and 'What is corporate deviance? Exploring negative and positive firm behavior' at the annual Academy of Management (AOM) Conference also held in Anaheim. The latter paper was selected for the Best Paper Proceedings. In addition, at the invitation of the UN Global Compact Office, Daina served as a facilitator for the All Academy Professional Development Workshop (PDW) entitled "Implementing the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) - The Questions We Have Not Asked (Yet)". Both the SBE and AOM conferences were held in California between August 7-13, 2008.

Joseph Yvon Thériault, Trudeau Fellow 2007, was nominated for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Globalization, Citizenship and Democracy at the Université du Québec à Montréal. His research will define the role of the political community in democracy, in a time of globalization.

George Elliott Clarke, 2005 Trudeau Fellow has been named Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as a poet, professor and volunteer who has brought his original voice and his perspective on the Black experience to contemporary Canadian literature, and who has generously shared his time and talents with young and emerging writers.

2006 Trudeau Mentor The Honourable Donald J. Johnston, was received Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to public service in Canada, and as secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, where he introduced many important initiatives that continue to benefit the international community.

2006 Trudeau Fellow Constance Backhouse, has become a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions as an award-winning educator and author in the areas of history and the law, and as an activist for human rights.

Spring 2008


Julia Christensen, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled 'Homeless in a homeland: emerging themes from Inuvik fieldwork' at the annaul conference of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation and the National Rural Research Network.  The theme for this year's conference was "Boom Bust Economies: Impact on Rural and Remote Communities" and it was held in Inuvik, NT from June 18 to 21, 2008.

2005 Scholar Christian Girard received the 2008 Antoinette-Robidoux Prize in the Young Volunteer category. The Foundation's Board Chair, Mr. Roy L. Heenan, received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the McGill University on May 26, 2008. The university underlined that Mr. Heenan is among McGill's most distinguished alumni. As the long-serving chairman of Heenan Blaikie, he has been largely responsible for the premier position of this law firm within the Canadian legal community. An adjunct professor at McGill for more than 25 years, Heenan held the position of chair of the Faculty of Law's Advisory Board when a program of transsystemic legal education was adopted and during the construction of the Gelber Law Library. Jennifer Welsh, Trudeau Fellow 2006, has been awarded a grant of £350,000 ($706,200) to establish a new Institute on the management and regulation of armed conflict. The Institute will be housed within the James Martin 21st Century School at the University of Oxford. The research program of the Institute will be inter-disciplinary, combining international relations, international law, and philosophy. Its primary aim will be to examine the relevance and applicability of the Just War tradition to contemporary conflict.

Eric Helleiner, Trudeau Fellow, gave the Breakfast on the Hill (BOH) lecture on December 11. The BOH is a lecture series organized by the Canadian Federation for the Social Sciences and Humanities. Held six times a year, it aims to demonstrate the importance of humanities and social science research in the development of public policy. Kate Hennessy, Trudeau Scholar, has launched the virtual exhibit Dane Wajich Dane-zaa Stories & Songs: Dreamers and the Land on October 25th. The exhibit showcases Doig River First Nation oral traditions and teaches about Dane-zaa history and culture through an exciting mix of video and sound files, photographs, and text. Constance Backhouse, Trudeau Fellow 2006, was elected "President Elect" of the American Society for Legal History. She is the first Canadian and the first non-US person to hold this prestigious position. The American Society for Legal History, founded in 1956, is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to fostering scholarship, teaching, and study concerning the law and institutions of all legal systems.

Grégoire Webber, Trudeau Alumnus Scholar, joined the Intergovernmental Affairs Branch of the Privy Council Office as a legal and constitutional advisor, on September 24, 2007.

Ken Caine, Trudeau Scholar, presented a co-authored paper (with Trudeau Scholars Colleen Davison and Emma Stewart) entitled "Preliminary field research in Canada's North: Methodological observations, alchemy and anxieties in social scientific research" at the Rural Sociological Society Annual Meeting held in Santa Clara, California from August 2-5, 2007.

Grégoire Webber, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled "The Constitution as Activity" at the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria on September 12, 2007. He also presented a paper of the same title at the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario on September 19, 2007.

Jessica Dempsey, Trudeau Scholar, participated in two meetings related to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Paris, France from July 2-13, 2007. She also co-organized a strategy session on the Convention on Biological Diversity attended by over 70 non-governmental, indigenous, community, social movement representatives, and activists. Ken Caine, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled "Community-based natural resource management as bricolage: Practice and strategy in the development of new resource management institutions in the Canadian North" at the International Symposium on Society and Natural Resources held in Park City, Utah from June 17-21, 2007.

Pierre-Hugues Verdier, Trudeau Scholar, received a high-level diploma from The Hague Academy of International Law. This year, only three high-level diplomas were awarded among 320 participants, and Pierre-Hugues is the first Canadian to receive the diploma since 1990.

Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, Trudeau Fellow, has been nominated Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres ("Knight of the Order of Arts and Literature"). This distinction is given by the French Government in recognition of significant contributions to the arts and literature, in France and in the world.

John Borrows, Trudeau Fellow, has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). Founded in 1882, the RSC is Canada's oldest scholarly organization. Election to RSC is one of the highest honours that can be achieved by scholars, artists and scientists in Canada.

Trudeau Scholar Kevin Chan and Trudeau Mentor David Morley organized a workshop on "Building Bridges Between NGOs and Academic Communities to Work in Global Development Settings", which took place in April 2007 at the Munk Centre of Toronto University. Christine Brabant, Trudeau Scholar, presented a workshop entitled 'L'encadrement de l'éducation à domicile au Québec : jouer à la police avec le gouvernement ou participer à la gouvernance ?' and a paper entitled 'Les nouvelles recherches sur l'éducation à domicile' at the Annual Conference of the Quebec Association for Home-based Education, held in Montreal on April 28, 2007.

Frank Iacobucci, Trudeau Mentor 2006, has been nominated as a companion of the Order of Canada, the highest level of distinction that recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement and merit of the highest degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large.

Alain-Désiré Nimubona, Trudeau Alumnus Scholar, is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo since July 1st, 2007. He will defend his doctoral dissertation on the contribution of the environmental services industry to environmental policymaking at HEC Montreal this fall.

Jason Luckerhoff, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled "Si le médium est le message, alors la langue est le discours médiatique" at the second edition of the international conference "Le Français parlé dans les médias" entitled "Les mises en scène du discours médiatique" organized by Université Laval and Université de Stockholm, Université Laval, June 22, 2007.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Trudeau Mentor, received the Mahbub ul Haq Award for Excellence in Human Development, a United Nations lifetime achievement award for human development. The award is named after Mahbub ul Haq, a renowed economist from Pakistan and one of the founders of human development theory.

P.-G. Forest, president of the Trudeau Foundation, has recently published one book chapter and two journal articles on healthcare management: "Policy Instruments and Health Reform: The Role for Evidence in Health Services Restructuring in Canada: New Evidence and New Directions, published by the John Deutsch Institute for the Study of Economic Policy, Queen's University; "Shared decision-making in Canada: update, challenges, and where next!" in the German Journal for Evidence and Quality in Health Care; and "Examining the role of context in the implementation of a deliberative public participation experiment: Results from a Canadian comparative study" in Social Science & Medicine.

Nora Doerr-MacEwen, Trudeau Alumnus Scholar, was awarded the Governor General of Canada's Gold Medal for the most outstanding PhD student at the University of Waterloo. She received her medal at the spring convocation of the University of Waterloo on June 13, 2007.

Grégoire Webber, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled "The Cult of Constitutional Rights Reasoning" at the VIIth World Congress of Constitutional Law in Athens organized by the International Association of Constitutional Law on June 14, 2007.

Lisa Helps, Trudeau Scholar, published an article entitled "Body, Power, Desire: Mapping Canadian Body History" in the Journal of Canadian Studies.

Jason Luckerhoff, Trudeau Scholar, presented a paper entitled "Technologie, démographie, globalisation. Des pratiques culturelles en mutation ?" at the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS), held at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières from May 7-11, 2007. This paper was part of a project sponsored by the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture on the development of cultural corporations and non-profit organizations in Quebec.

Trudeau Fellows Shana Poplack (2007) and Roderick A. Macdonald (2004) have been honoured with the 2007 Killam Prize, Canada's most distinguished annual award for outstanding career achievements in, respectively, humanities and social sciences. Congratulations to both!

Rajdeep Singh Gill, Trudeau Scholar, gave two lectures in the past two months: the first, entitled "Rang De Basanti and the Politics of Social Change in Postcolonial India," was presented at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, British Columbia on March 21, 2007; the second, entitled "Alternate Ontologies and Epistemologies of Art as Research," was presented at the Canadian Association of Fine Arts Deans' Symposium at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver.

Robert Huish, Trudeau Scholar, participated in Cuba's 10th annual Terry Fox Marathon of Hope run last March. He was in Havana to assist a rare delegation of U.S. physicians touring local hospitals and healthcare centres. His doctoral thesis is on Havana's Latin American School of Medicine, which trains poor students from rural Latin America to become qualified physicians.
