Who can be nominated?
Anyone can be nominated who meets the criteria set out below. Furthermore, the candidate is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or otherwise legally allowed to reside in Canada for the period that person would benefit from the funding.
Who can nominate a Trudeau Fellow?
The Foundation seeks nominations for Trudeau Fellowships on an ongoing basis from external advisors who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in academia, government, business, the voluntary sector and the arts.
Can I apply for a Trudeau Fellowship myself?
Trudeau Fellowships are unsolicited prizes and, as such, the Foundation does not accept applications from individuals.
What is the nomination process and what are the criteria?
For those who are invited by the Foundation to act as nominators, the nomination process is as follows.
Although there is no nomination form, a stong letter of nomination of two to four pages in length is critical to the selection process. An up-to-date complete academic curriculum vitae of the nominee will also be of considerable help. If supporting material is available concerning the nominee, it should be included. Specifically, the letter should refer to:
(1) the intellectual gifts of the nominee, focussing upon creative thinking to the highest international standards of a given discipline;
(2) the nominee's ability to communicate with other gifted thinkers and with the general public;
(3) how the prize might enable the nominee to advance her or his work; and to
(4) the nominee's commitment to work on issues related to one or more of the four themes of the Foundation (human rights and social justice; responsible citizenship; Canada and the world; humans and the natural environment).
The integrity of our selection process depends on receiving frank and thoughtful opinions from nominators. The names of nominators are kept in the strictest confidence, apart from University Presidents who understandably must act in an institutional capacity. The Trudeau Foundation specifically asks all nominators not to contact the nominee regarding the nomination.

Are Trudeau Fellows university professors?
The Foundation seeks out the finest thinkers in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, whether they are university professors or have chosen to express themselves through other creative work.
Must the research or creative work of the candidate be related to the themes of the Foundation?
Yes. In fact, the relationship to one or more of the Foundation themes is a basic requirement of the Trudeau Fellowship.
Are Trudeau Fellows chosen to pursue a specific research proposal?
Trudeau Fellows are chosen in recognition of outstanding achievement, innovative approaches to issues of public policy and commitment to public engagement, not for specific projects. Furthermore, the Trudeau Fellowship is not a life-time achievement award, but is given to facilitate the pursuit of leading-edge research and creative work in the social sciences and humanities.
