2007 fellow and Professor at the Linguistics Department of the University of Ottawa Shana Poplack has just published "Borrowing: Loanwords in the Speech Community and in the Grammar" (Oxford University Press, pp 272). This book focuses on the processof borrowing:how bilinguals introduce and adapt foreign words into recipient-language grammatical structure; how these forms diffuse across speakers and communities; how long they persist in real time; and whether they change over the duration. Building on decades of original research, with a special focus on our official languages, Shana Poplack demystifies the workings of this major manifestation of bilingualism in Canada and elsewhere.
