Earlier this month, the Association for Queer Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association awarded 2015 scholar William Hébert the 2017 Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize for outstanding anthropological scholarship on a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or trans* topic. Hébert’s paper is entitled "Prisoners of Paradox: Trans Figures in the Canadian Prison." He will receive the prize during the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association in Washington, DC, later this fall.

William Hébert (social-cultural anthropology, University of Toronto) is investigating the emergence of trans-affirming policies and projects for trans prisoners in Canada, and asking what they reveal about the conditions of, and limits to, inclusion.
