2014 mentor Mary Simon, a longtime Inuit leader, has been appointed as a special representative to the Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Northern Development, Carolyn Bennett. In this role she will advise the Federal government about the spending needs of the Arctic. She plans to consult and include Northern communities and First Nations groups to ensure that they have a say in the design and operations of any projects that affect them. She wants to focus on initiatives that will create a sustainable economy in the Arctic and incorporate traditional knowledge in decision-making processes. She will also consider how climate change can be mitigated in the Arctic, where its effects are already being felt.
