In November, McGill University lecturer in anthropology and 2009 scholar Jean-Michel Landry's dissertation entitled "The Practice of Shi'i Jurisprudence in Contemporary Lebanon," received the Association of Middle East Anthropology (AMEA) Dissertation Prize for 2017. The AMEA award committee "was especially impressed with the extensiveness of the research that provided the basis of the dissertation, the coherency and soundness of [his] argument, and the clarity of the writing." Congratulations!

Jean-Michel Landry

Jean-Michel explores the social history of the ideal of secularism in Lebanon, the exclusionary effects it sets out to combat, and those it sometimes generates.
